Depending on the baby's gestational age or stage of development, parents may want to gather memories and mementos like photos, footprints and ultrasound pictures and keep them in a designated box or container to help them remember and honor their baby.

Taking photos of your baby after he or she has passed may seem distasteful to you at first, but most parents who have lost a baby before or shortly after birth agree that they are grateful to have the photos later.

You don’t have to be in the photo holding your baby, but you certainly can if you wish to. Your nurses can arrange to have photos taken of your baby dressed or wrapped in a blanket.

Some parents plan a memorial service, funeral, or baptism or make a symbolic gesture like planting a tree. Others choose to cremate their child and scatter the ashes in a significant place.

Some hold on to the ashes with the intention of being buried with them once they pass on themselves. Whatever feels right to you is right.

Parents who lose a baby won't forget their baby. They'll carry him or her always in their hearts. Most bereaved parents say that time, more than anything, lessens the pain and allows them to move on with their lives.
