U.S. News & World Report names St. John's as one of the top 50 hospitals
in the U.S. for urological care
July 12, 2002
U.S. News & World Report has named St. John's Regional Health Center as
one of the top 50 hospitals in the United States for urological care in
its 13th annual edition of "America's Best Hospitals." This is the second
time St. John's has been included on the list. The first time was in 1999.
The magazine ranks 205 top medical centers, winnowed from 6,045, in 17
specialties. The rankings will appear in the July 22 issue of U.S.News &
World Report, which hits newsstands Monday, July 15. \
St. John's ranks No. 47 on the list. Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore
ranks first on the list, with Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, UCLA Medical
Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center rounding out the rest of
the top five. Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown University Hospital ranks last
on the list.
For more information on the rankings and the criteria involved, go to the
U.S. News Web site at www.usnews.com.
St. John's has four urologists on staff: Jeffrey Johnson, M.D., Robert
Johnson, M.D., Geoff Lloyd-Smith, M.D. and Mark Walterskirchen, M.D. A
year ago, Jeffrey Johnson, M.D. performed the first successful Viadur implant in
southwest Missouri. The Viadur implant is a new treatment for patients
with advanced prostate cancer. A tiny tube is implanted in the upper arm
that time-releases a year's worth of medicine to treat prostate cancer,
which eliminates the need for quarterly visits to the doctor and frequent
injections.
