For Medical Professionals
.................................................................................................................................................
St. John’s Stroke Center provides prevention,
treatment, and rehabilitation services for southwest Missouri and northwest
Arkansas in a 34-county service area. St. John’s is the primary provider for
Mercy Health Plans and Premier Plus. St. John’s also has direct contracts
with other companies to provide care for their employees.
The staffs of
St. John’s Emergency Medical Services,
and
St. John’s Life Line are trained in early recognition of stroke and play a vital
role in early intervention.
Emergency Trauma Center (ETC) physicians and
nurses are trained to recognize those who present with symptoms which may be
candidates for IV rt-PA interventions.
The Stroke Team Active Responders (STAR) are
team players in the rapid response and treatment of stroke, including
thrombolytic therapy with IV rt-PA (Activase), intra-arterial rt-PA
(Activase) and mechanical thrombolysis. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, this team consists of 4 St. John’s neurologists and four Stroke Center
Coordinators.
The STAR team responds to both ETC and
in-house interventions. St. John’s provides diagnostic CT scan, Magnetic
Resonance Imaging (MRI), cerebral angiogram, carotid ultrasound,
echocardiography, and Positron Emission Tomography (PET).
In February of 2004, St. John’s Stroke Center
became one of the first eight stroke centers in the nation to achieve
Primary Stroke Center Certification from The Joint Commission's
Disease-Specific Care Program.
This certification is indicative of
our program’s compliance with consensus-based national standards; effective
use of established clinical practice guidelines to manage and optimize care;
and performance measurement and improvement activities.
St. John’s Stroke Center has met many of the
goals that were originally set in 1998. As changes occur in the medical
field, our focus is then redefined and refined to meet the change.
