St. John’s Epilepsy Center Clinic

The St. John’s Epilepsy Center Clinic is staffed by an experienced, fellowship trained epileptologist, a neurosurgeon who trained under one of the foremost epilepsy surgeons in the world, two excellent neuropsychologists, state-of-the-art brain imaging capability, and comprehensive nursing resources for our patients.

The Epilepsy Center Clinic is located in the Neurology Suite and offers the following tests:

¢ Neurological and Behavioral exams
¢ Blood tests
¢ Electroencephalogram (EEG)
¢ Computerized Tomography (CT scan)
¢ Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
¢ Functional MRI (fMRI)
¢ Positron emission tomography (PET)
¢ Single-Photon Emission Computerized Tomography (SPECT)
¢ Neuropsychological tests (Examples include IQ test, memory test and
   speech assessments)

About Epilepsy
One out of 125 people have epilepsy, a neurological condition which affects the nervous system. It is usually diagnosed after a person has two seizures that have not been diagnosed with another medical condition. Symptoms may include:

Episodes of brief staring

Uncontrollable jerking of the limbs.

Loss of consciousness

Causes

The causes of epilepsy can range from genetics to various medical disorders. Some of the more common causes include:

Head trauma

Diseases

Prenatal injury

Developmental disorders (Autism and Downs syndrome)

Dementia (The foremost cause of epilepsy in older adults)

Medical disorders


Risk Factors

There are several risk factors for epilepsy. The most common include age, family history, stroke and other vascular diseases, a wound to the head, extended seizures in youth and an infection of the brain. Men are also more at risk than women.
