Dear Healthy People Reader
From the founding of St. John’s in 1891, the Sisters of Mercy have
relied on the generosity of donors to provide medical services to the
Ozarks. Early accounts tell of city leaders inviting the Sisters to
Springfield to open the area’s first hospital. They were provided a house
on north Washington Avenue, but they did not find out until some time
after they opened Springfield’s first hospital that there was a mortgage.
Almost immediately the Sisters had to raise funds to pay for the note.
That same reliance on philanthropy exists some
116 years later. St. John’s Foundation for Community Health provides
funding for various St. John’s and community programs. In fact, in our
last fiscal year, our financial assistance totaled more than $2.1 million.
You can see a complete list of those grants in the
Community Impact
section of our Web site.
With this issue of Healthy People, we’ll begin providing regular
information about Foundation activities, our donors and ways you can give.
We hope you find the information valuable. If you have questions or would
like additional information, please call the Foundation office at 820-6111
or toll free, 866-266-4584. You can also e-mail us at
