Radioactive iodine or Iodine-131 (I-131)
targets thyroid cells. I-131 is used in the treatment of thyroid conditions.
Most of the radiation from I-131 is absorbed by the thyroid gland and
decreases the function of the thyroid cells.
If you are treated with large doses of I-131,
you will need to be hospitalized and placed in isolation for 1-3 days after
taking this medication to decrease the risk of radiation exposure to others.
The radioactive iodine used in your treatment will remain in your body only
temporarily. I-131 is passed out of the body through all bodily fluids such
as stool, urine, saliva, and sweat.
To prevent exposure, you must be hospitalized
in a special isolation room so that all of your bodily fluids may be
disposed of properly.
