complex cardiovascular, surgical cases and cardiac rehabilitation.

St. John’s has led the region by providing breakthrough cardiac care
including:
- First to perform successful coronary
artery bypass surgery;
- First to open a cardiac intensive and
step-down unit;
- First to open a cardiac catheterization
lab;
- First to open an electrophysiology lab
for the treatment of abnormal heart rhythms;
- First to provide outpatient cardiac
rehab and education through Hammons Heart Institute, the area’s first
cardiac rehab facility;
- First to provide medical helicopter
service, crucial to heart attack patients;
- First to provide EKG transmissions from
ambulances to Emergency Room;
- First to provide thrombolytics in ground
and air ambulances;
- First to offer 64-slice CT scanner, a
high-resolution scanner that allows doctors to better and more
efficiently diagnose heart ailments.
