Health care systems share certain responsibilities in serving the needs of the uninsured, indigent and individuals who are economically poor. Each community has different needs, and each health care system meets these needs in different ways.

In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2006, St. John’s provided more than $12.9 million in charity care; $13 million in community outreach; $3.4 million in education and research; $1.5 million in donations and more than $46 million in Medicaid subsidies.

St. John’s Foundation for Community Health provided aid and grants of more than $2.1 million.

We take our obligations seriously. Our business is one of life and death.

Because of shortfalls in Medicaid funding and our commitment to provide care for those who cannot pay, we rely heavily on the community for help. St. John’s Foundation for Community Health helps facilitate those needs both inside and outside the health system.

We’ve had generous contributors step forward to help us in many of our efforts to improve health. This charitable giving assists us with purchasing new, life-saving equipment, upgrading our facilities and educating our staff to be among the best in the field.

You’ll learn about ways these contributions help in this report. You'll also learn about new initiatives to improve heart health and how you can help us in our efforts to address America’s No. 1 killer disease: heart disease.
